How to export Slack data

Short answer: a Workspace Owner or Admin (roles vary by plan) opens the workspace export page, picks a date range and starts the export. Slack delivers a ZIP of JSON files. On Free and Pro that covers public channels; private channels and DMs need Business+ or Enterprise and Slack's approval. Source: Slack Help, "Export your workspace data" (read 2026-11-08).

Slack export: a ZIP file of JSON-formatted data containing messages and file links, generated from the workspace's export page.

Steps

  1. Confirm your role and plan. If you cannot see the export page, ask a Workspace Owner or Admin.
  2. Decide the scope. Note the people, channels and dates the request covers. Private conversations need the approval path above, which takes time.
  3. Pick the date range from the export date range drop-down, then start the export.
  4. Download the ZIP from the workspace export page once Slack emails you that it is ready.
  5. Keep the original untouched and work on a copy. Record who exported it and when.
  6. Plan the review. The JSON is not readable like a mailbox; see how to search a Slack export.

Frequently asked questions

Can you export Slack DMs?

Not with the standard export on most plans. Per Slack Help, Free and Pro exports contain messages and file links from public channels. Private channels and direct messages need Business+ or Enterprise and an approval step: Business+ owners apply for a self-serve data export tool, and Enterprise Org Owners contact Slack Support.

Who can export Slack data?

Per Slack Help, Workspace Owners and Admins on Free and Pro, and Workspace Owners on Business+. On Enterprise, members with the Export Admin system role can also export. Roles vary by plan, so check your own workspace settings.

What format is a Slack export?

A ZIP file containing JSON-formatted data. It is machine-readable rather than made for reading, so you usually need a viewer or search step before a person can review it.

Is there a free way to export Slack messages?

Yes, for public channels: Free and Pro workspaces can export public-channel messages and file links, according to Slack Help. Slack's own page also notes limits on how far back Free plans can retrieve file links, so confirm the current wording before you rely on it.

Does exporting Slack data satisfy a legal hold or subpoena?

This page cannot say. An export is a copy of data, not a legal hold, and what you must preserve or produce is a question for your attorney.

Where a tool could help

Threadlens is an early concept for what comes after the export: search it, tag messages, share only the permitted ones and keep a review log. No product exists yet; the walkthrough is a 20-minute call about the concept.
